Victory day dubrovnik12/8/2023 Let us never forget their sacrifice, because it is the foundation on which we continue to build today's Croatia!ĭear fellow citizens, ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the City of Dubrovnik and myself, I congratulate you on Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders. Let us give them gratitude for the freedom we breathe with full lungs today. Let us cover with it our fallen knights, all veterans and civilians who died during the Croatian struggle for freedom, sovereignty and independence. The Homeland War in the Dubrovnik area was presented within the following themed units: The fall of the Dubrovnik Republic and history of Fort Imperial, The Serbian-Montenegrin aggression in 1991, The days of victory - the liberation actions of the Croatian Army, and the Suffering of the people, civilian buildings and cultural monuments. Code named 'Operation Storm', the attack mobilized some 200,000. May it fill our hearts again and may there be no room for bitterness in them, but sorrow. Officially called Victory and National (Homeland) Thanksgiving Day and Day of Croatian Defenders this national holiday on 5 August celebrates the day in 1995 that Croats retook territory in the 'Krajina' region from the hands of Serb rebels. The pride we feel every year on this day cannot diminish anything, nor can anyone take it away from us. "Storm" is truly the crown of the Homeland War. Twenty-five years ago, in August 1995, the Croatian army liberated about 11,000 square kilometres of occupied territory, or almost a fifth of Croatia's territory.ĭuring 84 hours, the military/police operation "Storm" showed all the strength and dignity of our army, it is a lasting reminder of the sacrifice and fearlessness of the people who defended their homeland. Colloquially known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is well known around the world for its stunning Old City, prominent city walls, pristine coastlines, and of course, for its role as King’s Landing in the Game of Thrones series.
